
Getting Your Mercury UV Bulbs Right
Standard mercury UV bulbs are basically the heavy lifters of the printing and coating world. They do one job: turn electricity into the kind of short-wave UV light that makes your inks and adhesives snap into place and harden instantly.
The Heat Struggle
Here is the thing about power. If you want your line moving fast, you need high wattage. But high wattage brings a lot of infrared heat. If you throw a high-power tube into a system that isn’t built to cool it down, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll either scorch your materials or burn out the bulb way too soon. We spend a lot of time tweaking the voltage and amperage just to make sure the arc stays steady from one end of the quartz tube to the other. It’s a delicate balance.
All About the Glass
We use high-purity fused quartz because it lets the UV light through without blocking it. Plus, it can handle the wild swings in temperature—heating up and cooling down fast—without just cracking. These lamps hit a broad spectrum, mostly peaking at 254nm and 365nm. That makes them pretty flexible. But you’ve got to make sure the bulb matches your ink chemistry. If they don’t play nice, you’ll end up with “surface cure.” That’s when the top looks dry, but you touch it and realize the bottom is still a sticky mess. Not a great look.
Setup and Keeping Things Running
Most of our bulbs have standard end-caps, so they should slide right into your existing reflectors without any fuss. But please, make sure they are seated perfectly in the socket. A loose connection leads to electrical arcing. That pits the electrodes and kills the lamp. It’s a small mistake that costs a lot of money. We aren’t just shipping you a box of parts. We want to help you figure out the right wattage for your specific conveyor speed. If your cure rate feels off, don’t just buy a more powerful bulb. Let’s look at the distance between the lamp and your product first. Often, the fix isn’t more power—it’s just adjusting the focal point of your reflector to get the light hitting exactly where it needs to.
